Pembroke Commits to New Vocational High School Construction Debt
Key Points
- $117,000 approved for first-year construction debt service
- Meets 2/3 majority requirement for borrowing
- Emotional testimony from vocational graduates influenced the debate
Voters narrowly cleared the two-thirds majority threshold required to approve Article 11, authorizing $117,000 for the town's share of debt service for a new Southshore Regional Vocational Technical High School. The vote represents a significant step in the town's recent move to join the regional district and secure modern facilities for vocational students.
The discussion highlighted a divide between residents concerned about rising costs for seniors and those prioritizing educational diversity. Resident Brian Hagen asked when is enough enough,
pointing to the pressure of inflation and high gas prices on residents over 65. However, several graduates of vocational programs spoke passionately about how hands-on
learning prevented them from dropping out and led to high-paying careers. Steve Ciciotti of the Advisory Committee noted that while the project is expensive, it remains the lowest cost option
to restore vocational access to Pembroke students.
Motion: Sue Bowlinger moves that the town vote to appropriate the sum of $117,000 for the purpose of paying the town's allocable share for fiscal year 2027 of the bonds issued... for a new district high school.
Vote: Passed by 2/3 Majority (258-128)
